Sleep § Productivity

  • Caffeine works by blocking the effects of a neurotransmitter called adenosine, which builds up over the course of the day and makes you feel tired.

  • That means, the best time to drink coffee is before you are tired.

  • If you got tired, the good way to refreshen is to drink a cup of coffee and take a nap. Nap will drop adenosine off, so that caffeine can take its place (to block receptors).

  • Espresso has more caffeine per ml than brewed coffee, but you only get a 30 ml in a shot, so actual caffeine intake is smaller.

  • Green tea contains less caffeine than coffee. But, “green tea also contains the amino acid L-theanine, which has been shown to work synergistically with caffeine. Thus, you get a milder but different kind of buzz than with coffee, despite the lower caffeine content of green tea. In particular, the combination of L-theanine and caffeine has been shown to help improve both alertness and focus, which may make green tea a better drink than coffee if you’re doing tasks that require a lot of thought.”

  • Knapp & Zeratsky2018 has a good section on coffee.

  • Caffeine has a half-dissolve period of 6 hours (?). Don’t drink coffee before Sleep.
