Commercial Open-Source Software

  • One of the dangers for Commercial OSS companies wanting to offer their product as a service is that AWS could do that earlier

    • They have quite a big advantage being a huge company, and you loose first move advantage.

  • This is what happened with Elasticsearch—while they were focusing on developing the software and wanted to build an Elasticsearch Cloud, AWS offered Elasticsearch as a Service first.

  • How to overcome (?)

    • Launch it first (e.g., Sentry, GitLab)

    • Form agreements with could providers (Azure, Google Cloud, AWS) to help them integrate and share profits

      • Grafana way—not sure how it worked out

    • Use restrictive licenses—but that undermines Open Source
