๐Open source inhibits progress for development tools
- source
Software developers expect dev tools to be open source and free. This disincentives development of development tools. (Open source slows progress in software technology by demonetizing it)
Argument
- Virtually every programming language / compiler are open-source
- there are exceptions such as Mu (Haskell VM) and Intel compiler
Counterargument
- JetBrains built a company selling IDEs
- LLM-based editors/agents are an example of paid development tools
