📝DLT trust is dependent on majority following the rules

Distributed ledgers help to establish trust in a trustless environment. However, the established trust is dependent on the belief that majority of voting power (computing power, stake, number of nodes) follows the rules faithfully. Otherwise, the ledger is susceptible to 51% attack.

Implications

  • It’s much easier to execute 51% attack on smaller ledgers, so they should be considered unsafe and shouldn’t be trusted .

  • Ledgers operated by a single party (person/company/government) do not generate additional trust (on top of your trust in the party).
