If job titles/levels system is trusted, it grants assumed credibility to a person.
This may be corrupted by ego which leads to title chasing. But it can also be helpful for the company β Having appropriate job title helps save time and energy.

More generally, Job titles are a tool to quickly establish context when you meet a co-worker for the first time.
Job title = role + level. I think the credibility is mostly tied to levels (or perceived level of a role).
