Software developers expect dev tools to be open source and free. This disincentives development of development tools. (Open source slows progress in software technology by demonetizing it)

Argument

• Virtually every programming language / compiler are open-source

  • maybe the only exception is Mu (Haskell VM) and Intel compiler
